Spain Declares Red Alert as Storm Leonardo Unleashes Flooding
Officials have shuttered schools, blocked off roadways, and suspended rail operations in crisis zones, evacuating more than 3,000 residents from Cadiz, Malaga, and Jaen.
The Andalusian 112 emergency service logged 159 separate incidents by early Wednesday morning, with Cadiz, Malaga, Granada, Seville, and Jaen bearing the brunt of the catastrophic weather system.
Emergency responders have tackled 1,320 incidents since the tempest began, adding to more than 5,500 interventions recorded since January 27.
Civil Protection issued urgent advisories to inhabitants across 48 municipalities, warning that certain locations face potential rainfall exceeding 200 liters per square meter.
Six waterways have reached critical red alert status, with 18 additional rivers on orange alert. The Guadiaro River near Malaga has already breached its banks.
Ceuta found itself completely isolated by both maritime and aviation routes after authorities terminated sea and air connections following an orange-level coastal alert. Educational institutions in the autonomous city were shuttered as well.
The Andalusian Government implored citizens to avoid travel, stay clear of flooded zones, and relocate to elevated terrain.
Railway operations throughout Andalusia—encompassing high-speed, long-distance, medium-distance, and commuter lines—faced sweeping cancellations. Only limited routes continue running.
The Spanish Directorate General of Traffic verified that over 30 roadways remain impassable due to inundation, mudslides, and snow buildup.
Electrical service failures struck Coripe and outlying districts of Moron de la Frontera, while harbors, tourist attractions, and government buildings in Cadiz and the Strait of Gibraltar remain shut.
